- For candidates qualifying through a Master’s degree or equivalent qualification, General/Unreserved/General-EWS candidates must have at least 55% marks, without rounding off.
- Candidates belonging to OBC (Non-Creamy Layer), SC, ST, PwD/PwBD, and Third Gender categories must have at least 50% marks, subject to the applicable eligibility rules.
- Candidates holding a Ph.D. degree whose Master’s-level examination was completed by 19 September 1991 are eligible for a 5% relaxation in the minimum marks requirement, subject to the applicable eligibility conditions.
Candidates who are pursuing the final year/semester of their Master’s degree or whose qualifying examination results are awaited may apply provisionally, subject to the prescribed eligibility conditions.
Candidates qualifying for JRF must fulfill the required Master’s-degree qualification and marks requirements within two years from the date of declaration of the Joint CSIR-UGC NET result. The applicable completion period differs for candidates qualifying only for Ph.D. admission.
Candidates who are pursuing a four-year/eight-semester Bachelor’s degree program and are in their final semester/year may also apply for the examination. Such candidates will be admitted provisionally and will be considered eligible for JRF or admission to Ph.D. only after fulfilling the prescribed requirements within two years from the date of declaration of the NET result if qualified for JRF, or within one year if qualified only for Ph.D. admission.

Candidates who have served in the armed forces may also be eligible for relaxation of up to five years, subject to the prescribed conditions.
